Donald “Deac” Cain, 82, died Friday, March 1, 2013 at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00PM on Friday, March 15, 2013 at the West Liberty Community Center with Military Honors to follow. Memorials may be made to the Community Jubilee Center in Muscatine or the West Liberty American Legion Post #509.
Deac was born July 30, 1930 in Beacon, Iowa, the son of Edward and Clara Nealson Cain. He graduated from West Liberty High School in 1948. He served in the United State Air Force during the Korean War. He was united in marriage to Hanne Jensen in 1955. He later married Florence Atkinson who preceded him in death in 1996. He was united in marriage to Arlene Clark in 2004 who survives him.
He retired from the Stores Department of University of Iowa. He then worked for Liquid Grow during the spring and fall seasons. He was always looking for other opportunities.
Deac was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Muscatine. In the church, he was a member of the vestry and the Jubilee Committee. As a part of the committee, he helped establish the Community Jubilee Center. He was a past commander of American Legion Post #509 and was instrumental in the development and completion of the West Liberty Veterans Memorial. He also helped to establish the annual golf tournament to benefit the legion and was a driver for the RSVP Ride Service in West Liberty. He was a founding member of the West Liberty Country Club.
Deac was a kind and gentle man who was always willing to lend a helping hand and gathered energy from being with others.
He is survived by his wife Arlene, daughters: Allison, Michelle (and husband Darrel), Wendi and a son Don; grandchildren: Audrey Jean (Ryan), Mathew, Tyler, Luke, Aaron, Addon, and Emri. He is also survived by many other loving family members and special aunt Lucille.
