West Branch, Iowa Carol Jean Secrest, 67, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by beloved friends and family on Wednesday, March 7, 2012, after battling cancer for nearly five years. Visitation will be at the Henderson Barker Funeral Home in West Branch on Sunday, March 11th between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 12th, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in West Branch. She will be laid to rest in the West Branch Cemetery. A luncheon will follow in the fellowship hall of the church. Carol worked for many years in West Branch, first at Royal Blue, a family owned grocery store, at Carol’s Beauty Salon, which was in the lower level of her home, and at the West Branch School District. Then for over 20 years, she worked in Iowa City at the North Dodge branch of the University of Iowa Community Credit Union. Although Carol lived in West Branch for the majority of her life, her involvement in the surrounding community was immeasurable, as she was very generous with her time and talents and she touched many lives. She was active in the United Methodist Church, baking communion bread, participating in choir and other church groups, and reaching out to help people over the years. She was constantly knitting blankets and hats for The Preemie Project, and was heavily involved in fund raising activities such as the Children’s Miracle Network. She enjoyed and was the master of many crafts, including gardening, reading, baking, sewing, and calligraphy. Carol was a compassionate daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.
