WEST LIBERTY:
Lois Schermerhorn, 83, of Vinton, formerly of West Liberty, died Monday, January 9, 2012 at St. Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids from complications of heart surgery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday at Phillips Family Center in Vinton. A Scripture Service will be held at 7:45 p.m.
Visitation will also be from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday at Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. Committal Services will be conducted at 10: 30 a.m., Saturday, January 14, 2012 at North Prairie Cemetery, West Liberty. A Memorial Service will follow at 11 a.m, Saturday, First Church United in West Liberty with Pastor Marian Hart and General Presbyter Harry Olthoff officiating.
Lois was born March 8, 1928 at Mine Hill, NJ to Robert C. and Mildred (Osmun) Johnston. She graduated from the Dover High School and received a Bachelor's Degree from New Jersey College for Women in New Brunswick, NJ.
On October 15, 1949 she was united in marriage to Edward J. Schermerhorn at Dover, NJ. He preceded her in death in 1989.
Lois was a member of the Vinton Presbyterian Church and a former member of First Church United in West Liberty. She was very active in the Presbyterian Women, both locally and nationally and the American Legion Auxiliary. She belonged to the Sew and Sew Club and was an avid reader and library patron. She was an active volunteer with the West Liberty Chamber of Commerce. Lois believed strongly in organ donation. While living in Vinton she made her home at the Lutheran Assisted Living Apartments.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, James in 2001.
Lois is survived by her daughter, Beth (David L.) Jensen of Van Horne and James' two daughters.
