West Liberty, Iowa Leonard “Doc” A. Larson D.V.M., 83, a 60-year practicing veterinarian died Friday, January 8, 2010 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held 11 A.M. Monday, January 11, 2010 at the First Church United in West Liberty. Visitation will be held Sunday from 3 to 6 P.M. at the First Church United in West Liberty. A Masonic Service will be held at 6:00 P.M. Sunday at the Church. The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.hendersonbarkerfuneralhome.com. Leonard was born August 27, 1926 in Duluth, Minnesota the son of Levi A. and Cecelia Konop Larson. He was a graduate of Duluth Central High School; he attended the University of Minnesota and graduated from Iowa State University in 1947 with his degree in Veterinary Medicine. He practiced Veterinary Medicine in West Liberty for 60 years, retiring in 2007. On May 1, 1949 he was united in marriage to Shirley Schmidt, she died in 1981. He later married Barbara Sawyer Billick on January 14, 1983 in West Liberty, she died in 2004. He was a member of the First Church United in West Liberty, a charter member of the West Liberty Lions Club, 50 year member of the Mt. Calvary #95 Masonic Lodge and a member of Lotus Chapter #320 of Eastern Star. He was Past Grand Chaplain of Royal Arch Masons of Iowa and Past Grand Sentinal of Order of Eastern Star of Iowa. He was a member of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association and American Veterinary Medical Association. He served the City of West Liberty as a Council Member and served as president of the West Liberty School Board. Survivors include three Children: Robert (Terri) Larson of West Liberty, Judith (James) Handsaker of Racliffe and Leon (Mary) Larson of West Liberty. 8 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter Grace also survive. Three sisters: Dorothy Holecek of Duluth, Minnesota, Celia Schroeder of Bismarck, North Dakota and Marge (Don) Johnson of Duluth, Minnesota. Brother: Tom (Char) Larson of Duluth, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wives Shirley and Barbara.
