"Thanks from the fat kid".
It only took an instant to lose 50 years from my age and feel 12 again. Mr. Wheeler, Coach Wheeler or whatever favorite greeting you used for him was always met with his full attention. Some kids are afraid of gym class, the pain, the inability to be the best at or even do the exercise or play the game. As a fat kid I always felt accepted and motivated by Coach Wheeler because he always encouraged me to try...to attempt...to improve. He personalized my experience with nicknames; Double D, Big D, etc. Yes, my initials are DD. Yes, I was bigger than I wanted to be, but I sincerely doubt the alternative meanings were ever on his mind.
Thank you for teaching me to try, to do my best whatever my level of ability and most of all to be kind, supportive and encouraging to those that needed it.

I had the privilege to meet Jim, as a friend of Teri and Mark”s. Our girls grew up together. It was always a joy to speak to him at different events and to see his smile. I know he is smiling at this moment as he watches his wife and children come together to honor this great man.

Wheeler family, you have my deepest sympathy. "Wheels" was such a wonderful person,he touched so many lives. I can still hear his voice booming across the All Purpose room at school saying "Jindrich - get your head outta your sock!".He will be greatly missed and I am so very sorry for your loss.

So many basketball games shared with “The Bear” and Pat at the Des Moines “barn”. When retirement took them south we visited Osage Beach and saw how much a part of that community they both were. The Kochs shared many memories with Jim and Pat.

My memories began in 1963 when he was my P.E. teacher at Mid-Prarie and later united when we together, we coached the boys basketball team at West Branch with his son, Chris. I was always impressed with his calmness and leadership that he demonstrated in the tense moments of the game. Jim was a great example of what a father, husband and teacher should be. In reading his obit I realized what a positive influence he had on my life and how I miss his friendship.
All the way from Bakersfield California Roger & Dixie want to share our sincerest condolences and prayers to Pat, Chris, Robin and Terri. We pray that you feel the presence of Jesus love and comfort from heaven above, now and forever.

An absolutely great guy and coach. I will remember him fondly coaching us through 4 years of high school golf and taking us to the state tournament our junior and senior years. 40+ years later and I still use some of the golf techniques he taught us in practice.
