I worked with Jim from the time he volunteered as a high school kid until my retirement in 2011. He was such an inspiration to all of us at the Hoover Library. Beginning as that high school kid, he soaked up everything he could learn about AV work at the Library until he became the one we all depended on when we needed anything in that area. He had probably the best sick leave record of us all and most always had hours of annual leave (vacation) to donate to that program at the end of every year. However, Jim did not appreciate our staff potlucks so usually sacrificed a day of that annual leave so he could avoid a potluck (haha). I could not attend Jim's memorial due to my own handicaps in my old age but I sure will be there in spirit along with others from our Hoover family of which Jim was a crucial part for so many years.

I worked with Jim for more than 20 years at the Hoover Presidential Library in West Branch. He was, quite frankly, a treasure for all of us on the staff. He was selfless and joyful in his attitude toward work and in working with others. He was ingenious in his ability to find solutions to complex problems. He was generous with his time and worked long hours -- often on the weekends -- to insure that programs stayed on track and no one was inconvenienced.
All of us who knew and worked with Jim were made better by knowing him. We were blessed by his presence and we miss him every day.

This was a truly amazing person. I would see Jim in West Branch and when I was new to town, pull over and offer a ride, always a bright smile and a thank-you but he was getting there on his own. In so many ways, we don't take stock, count our blessings.
I think Jim had a perspective few have. I think anyone who knew Jim Detlefsen was enriched by his time here on Earth.
I know mine was.

I am saddened to hear of Jim's passing -- my thoughts and payers are with him and family.
Jimmy D as I often called him, was a friend and classmate of mine at Roosevelt Elementary School in Iowa City. He would spend part of his day at Roosevelt when he was at the University Hospital School. He always brought a smile with him and made the other kids feel special.
Although we were in school to learn the basic reading, spelling and writing skills - Jimmy D taught us life lessons about courage, perseverance, gratitude and kindness.
He will never know the positive impact that he had so many people's lives -- I will miss him
