Obituary of Doris Hinkhouse

Doris Guthrie Hinkhouse 95, went to be with her lord on Friday, June 8,2018 at Crestview Care Center in West Branch Iowa, where she had been a resident for a few months.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at the Friends Church in West Branch. Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 7 P.M. at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Branch. Burial will be in the Springdale Cemetery, rural West Branch. The family would like to thank the entire staff at Crestview care Center for their loving care and support, Iowa City Hospice and so many of those in the community for their prayers and kindness. Doris was born in Liberty Iowa, a small town in Marshall county, on September 24, 1922 the daughter of Taylor and Irma (Horton) Guthrie who were Friends pastors serving in Liberty and Le Grand before moving their family to West Branch.
Doris graduated from West Branch High School inn 1940 and married Herbert Hinkhouse on December 31, 1941. The couple planned to farm, but Herb joined the US Army in the spring of 1941 and served in the European theater until World War II ended. Doris spent those years in an accounting office in Cedar Rapids.
After the war years Herb and Doris returned to the farm and raised five children. Doris was always very active in the Friends Church, Farm Bureau Women, WTCU, Carnation Club and spent several years on the West Branch School board. There was always a piano in her home, she loved to play and sing and did so throughout her life. She enjoyed doing reflexology on her family and friends, quilting and puzzles.
She is survived by her sons Richard (Anji), Clifford (Monica), Glenn (Pam) all of West Branch, son Stanley, and daughter Hilda (Bill) Bowers both of West Liberty, eight grandchildren Rob Hinkhouse, Michelle Hinkhouse, Jon Hinkhouse, Amy Neufeld, Chris Hinkhouse, Kelly Potthoff, Ryan Bowers, Dustin Bowers, and fourteen great grandchildren. One brother David Guthrie of North Carolina also survives She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Victor, Harold, Stephen, Willis, Wayne (Buck), Dean, sister Ruth Rhoades and husband Herb.
