Virgil W. Harned, 93, died Thursday April 4, 2013 at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Monday April 8, 2013 at the First Church United in West Liberty. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 P.M. at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty. Memorials may be made to the West Liberty Fire Department.
Virgil was born February 15, 1920 in West Liberty the son of Carl and Freda Crozer Harned. He was a graduate of West Liberty High School in the Class of 1938. On November 22, 1941 he was united in marriage to Venita Vetter in Muscatine, Iowa. He served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII.
Virgil and Venita purchased the Brown Lynch Hardware store in West Liberty and operated for many years as Harned True Value Hardware until their retirement.
He was a member of the First Church United in West Liberty and had served on many boards at the former Presbyterian Church. Was a 50+ year member of the Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd Degree Mason, Muscatine Moose Lodge, Mansell Phillips American Legion Post #509, West Liberty Fire Department and Former Chamber of Commerce member, City Council Member and the Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife Venita Harned of West Liberty. Three children: Donna (James) Stagg of West Liberty, Kenneth (Sydney) Harned of West Liberty and Linda (Lyle) Buline of Lone Tree, Iowa. 6 grandchildren: Debra (Marty) Haugh, Andrew (Danielle) Stagg, Curtis (Melissa) Stagg, Brandon (Renee) Harned, Kyle (Laura) Harned and Melinda (Brad) Tripses. 13 great grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant brother Bob.
