West Branch, Iowa Joseph Patrick “Pat” Maher, 73, died Monday, February 23, 2009 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City due to complications from surgery. Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Saturday February 28, 2009 at St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church in West Branch. Visitation will be held Friday from 3:30 until 7:30 P.M. at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Branch where a wake service will be held at 7:30 P.M. Joseph Patrick was born March 17, 1935 near Cedar Bluff, Iowa the son of James R. and Martha Malake Maher. He was a graduate of Tipton High School in 1954. On August 31, 1963 he was united in marriage to Leone “Polly” Gruwell at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tipton. He had served with the United State Army Airborne from 1957-59 where he was stationed in Germany and Lebanon. In his early years Pat had worked on the family farm, he later worked in commercial and residential construction and continued his career in construction/carpentry with the University of Iowa for 24 ½ years retiring in 1998. He was a member of St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church and the Carpenters Local Union in Iowa City. Pat enjoyed the outdoors, metal detecting and most importantly his family and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife Polly Maher of West Branch. Three Daughters: Teresa (Kris) Kober, Rhonda (David) Shultz, and Patricia (Gene) Harpole all of West Branch. One son: Jeffrey Maher of West Branch. 7 grandchildren: Joseph Maher, Max and Alice Kober, Brandon Shultz, Madison, Gabe and Katie Harpole. Brother: Donald (Jean) Maher of Tipton and a sister: Linda (Dave) Paulson of Carroll. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert and a sister Dorothy Voparil.
