Amos E. Morrison, 90, died Thursday, August 9, 2012 at his home in West Liberty.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00AM on Monday, August 13, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in West Liberty. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00PM on Sunday at the church. Burial will be at North Prairie Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post 509. Memorials may be made to the West Liberty Fire Department or American Legion Post 509.
Amos was born October 9, 1921 to Marvin and Viola Lehman Morrison in Atalissa, Iowa. He graduated from West Liberty High School in 1939. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was united in marriage to Joan Chopek on September 23, 1950 in Iowa City. She preceded him in death on November 24, 1997.
Amos retired from the West Liberty Oil Company in 1995, having been in the business for 43 years. He served on the West Liberty City Council from 1967 until 1978. He then became mayor of West Liberty in 1978 and served in this position until 1981. Amos was a member of American Legion Post 509 and the West Liberty Fire Department. He enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren, gardening, the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Chicago Cubs and penny slots.
He is survived by his children, Karen Morrison, Nancy (Loren) Schaapveld, and David Morrison, all of West Liberty; Luann (Dave) Bjork of Kirksville, Missouri, and Traci (Rich) Hayes and Kelly Morrison, both of West Liberty; grandchildren, Pat (Jodi) Schaapveld of Ankeny, Andy (Lindsay) Schaapveld of Waverly, Amy (Lars) Underbakke of West Liberty, Eric Bjork of Columbia, Missouri, Allie Bjork of Kirksville, Missouri, Carrie Overturf of North Liberty, Ashlie Hayes of Amana, and Ty Hayes of North Liberty; and three great grandchildren with two more on the way. He is also survived by his brothers, Harold, Lewis and Ray Morrison and sisters, Leota Shaw, June Olds and Elsie Powers.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Joan, brothers, Roy, Albert, Floyd, and William and sisters, Alice, Violet, Ruth and Helen.
