Richard A. Weiss, 83, died Friday November 28, 2008 at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held 10 A.M. Monday December 1, 2008 at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty. A memorial fund has been established.
Richard was born June 1, 1925 in Atalissa the son of Leonard and Else Fuerst Weiss. He was a graduate of Kewanee High School, Kewanee, Illinois in 1943. On September 29, 1946 he was united in marriage to the former Winifred Gosch.
He had started farming with his grandfather and uncle in Kewanee, moving to Atalissa in 1948 where he continued to farm and raise dairy cows until his retirement. He also had worked in the West Liberty School System driving bus for a number of years.
He was a member of Shepherd of the Cross Church in Muscatine. Enjoyed raising roses and was a member of the American Rose Society. He showed many of his roses at county fairs and was Superintendent of the Floral Dept at the Muscatine County Fair. He was honored to have some of his roses used in the Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena, California in 1980.
He is survived by his wife Winifred of Atalissa. Three Sons: Ricky (Deborah) Weiss of Atalissa, Rodney (Denise) Weiss of Park View and Randy (Denise) Weiss of North Liberty. 5 Grandchildren: Jeremy Weiss, Emily (Brad) Peters, Andrea Weiss, Rachel Weiss and John Weiss. One great granddaughter: Caitlynn Peters. Brother: Leonard (Alice) Weiss and Sister: Delores Miller both of Kewanee, Illinois. He is also survived by a nephew and several nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents.
