Pauline Margaret Hammons, 90, formerly of Nichols died Saturday February 26, 2011 at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty following a lingering illness.
Funeral services will be held 11 am Thursday March 3, 2011 at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City. Memorials may be made to Iowa City Hospice or Simpson Memorial Home activities department.
Pauline was born July 29, 1920 near Iowa City the daughter of George Vincent and Barbara Anne Pitlick Frauenholtz. She attended Johnson County country schools and was a graduate of Oxford High School in 1938; she later attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and the University of Iowa. For 11 years she had taught school in Johnson County country schools.
On August 12, 1946 Pauline was united in marriage to Cecil S. Hammons in Iowa City. The couple had farmed for 24 years, East of Lone Tree. She loved the country; enjoying the farm animals, birds, her garden, flowers, yard work and most recently watching the squirrels from the window in her room at the nursing home. Her husband said, “She’d rather drive a tractor than eat.”
Survivors include three children: Gene (Vickie) Hammons of Atalissa, Iowa, Kenneth R. Hammons of Fulton, Illinois and Dale (Julie) Hammons of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota. Four grandchildren: Heather (Jake) Larson, Megan (Matt) O’Neil, Jennifer (Brad) Tyler and Misty Williams. Four great grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren to be born soon. Three brothers: Robert (Shirley) Frauenholtz of West Liberty, Donald (Thelma) Frauenholtz of West Branch, Francis (Ruth) Frauenholtz of North Liberty and a sister in law: Shirley Frauenholtz of Iowa City. She was preceded in death by her parents, Husband Cecil in 1991, Daughter Shirley in 1975, Brothers: George and Raymond and 3 grandchildren.
