Atalissa, Iowa Dorothy E. Spilger, 84, of Atalissa, died Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Services will be held at 1:00PM on Friday, March 7, 2008 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Atalissa with Rev. Lynn Thiede officiating. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 PM on Thursday at the Zion Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery in West Liberty. The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty is in charge of arrangements. A memorial fund has been established. Dorothy was born on September 17, 1923 in rural Walcott, the daughter of Roland and Thelma Arp Rochau. She graduated from Atalissa High School in 1941. Dorothy was united in marriage to Merlyn Spilger on April 24, 1942 in Atalissa. She was employed with Owens Brush for 15 years. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. Dorothy was a great cook and she was especially noted for her pies. She also enjoyed sewing and making quilts, which were not finished until she put her signature on them. Dorothy was a social person and enjoyed going to dances with Merlyn. They also stayed active by regularly swimming at the Wilton swimming pool. Merlyn and Dorothy have resided at their farm ever since first moving there in1954. Survivors include her husband: Merlyn, her children: Nancy Spilger of Iowa City, Gary (Ruth) Spilger of Clinton, Iowa, Linda (John) Croft of Fremont, CA, Dennis Spilger, of Atalissa, Merna Spilger of North Liberty, sister Arlene (Don) Passmore of Atalissa, brother: Donald Rochau of Hanover Park, IL, grandchildren: Ben, Brian, Anna, and Amy and great grandchildren: Nick and Molly. She is also survived by brothers-in-law: Harold Spilger of Iowa City, Wayne Spilger of Florida and Leland (Loretta) Spilger of Atalissa; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents, her daughter: Carol and sisters: Bernice and Phyllis.
