Ada Achenbach Heinsius Simmons, 89, of 611 W. Main St., West Branch, died Saturday, April 26, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City of a stroke.
Services will be at 11:00AM on Wednesday, April 30,2008, at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home, 201 Pedersen St., West Branch. Friends may call from 4:00-7:00PM Tuesday. Burial is at Shawver Cemetery, Cedar Bluff, Iowa. Memorials can be made to the Crestview Nursing and Rehab Center.
Ada was born near Bennett in rural Cedar County on April 3, 1919, the daughter of Isaac and Ethel Sproston Achenbach. She married Russell Heinsius on April 13, 1938. Three children were born to this union: James, Tom and Charles. On October 27, 1953 she was united in marriage to Delbert Simmons. There were 5 step children to the union: Karen, Richard, Michael, Sharon and Rosemary.
After school she went to work with Dr. Pauline Moore as her assistant for many years and helped deliver babies and give medical aid to much of the residents of rural Cedar County as well as the office practice in Iowa City. She was a care giver to elderly people at night, a tireless worker. She was administrator of a Nursing Home in Mt. Vernon and in Tipton.
In retirement she helped on the Crestview Nursing Home Advisory Board in West Branch until 2001.
She is survived by a special friend: Conrad Gregg; two sisters: Norma Long and Jean Gilliatt, two sons James and Charles Heinsius; a sister-in-law: Gloria Achenbach and step children: Ruth Heinsius, Karen Gost, Michael Simmons, Sharon Jensen and Rosemary. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers: Andrew, George and Richard Achenbach; her sisters: Naomi Dvorsky, her son Tom Heinsius, and her step son: Richard Simmons.
