Agnes Strumpel, 98, of West Liberty, Iowa, died September 28, 2010 at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.
Visitation will be Sunday, October 3,2010 2-4 pm, at Henderson-Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty. Funeral services, Monday at 10:30 am at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Iowa City. Graveside Service at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Latimer, Iowa 4 pm Monday. Memorials may be made to Lutheran Bible Translators.
Agnes Maria Schumacher Strumpel was born December 8, 1911 in Maxfield Township near Readlyn, Iowa to Henry and Anna (Herman) Schumacher. She was baptized at home on December 25, 1911, by Reverend Louis Yockey, of Immanuel Lutheran Church near Klinger, Iowa and attended school there.
In 1922 the family moved to Readlyn where she attended St. Paul Lutheran School and was confirmed April 5, 1925 by Reverend H. Maas. Agnes was employed as a telephone operator at the Readlyn Telephone Company.
She married John C. Strumpel on January 8, 1935 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Readlyn by Reverend T. Frese. They lived in Knittle, Iowa where she and John operated the Knittle Creamery Company for 30 years. In 1966, they moved to Waverly where Agnes worked in the Dietary Department at St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital.
After retiring from the hospital, they moved to Latimer, Iowa. In 1988, after the death of her husband, Agnes returned to live in Waverly and moved to West Liberty in 1995.
She is survived by three children:Lois Radke of Aurelia, Iowa, Kareen Strumpel of Coralville, and Thomas (Corinne) Strumpel of West Liberty; three grandchildren: Michael (Suzette) Radke of Aurelia, Aaron Strumpel of Woodland Park, Colorado, and Emily (Nathan) Worden of Seattle, Washington; five great-grandchildren: Scott, Schuyler, and Bryce Radke of Aurelia, and Dominic and Nadiya Worden of Seattle and her aunt, Emily Schumacher of Readlyn.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, brother Clarence Schumacher, sister Esther Johnson, two infant grandsons, and son-in-law Gerald Radke.
