Marie Bernice Jansen, 93, formerly of Nichols died Monday April 5, 2010 at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.
Funeral mass will be held 10:00 A.M. Saturday April 10, 2010 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in West Liberty. Visitation for Marie will be held Friday from 4 to 7 P.M. at the church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Nichols, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established.
Marie was born July 25, 1916 at Nichols the daughter of John Theodore and Grace Green Neff. She was a graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1934. On April 11, 1942 she was united in marriage to Alphonse W. Jansen at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nichols. She was a member of St. March’s Church in Nichols most of her life, and also was a member of the St. Mary’s Prayer group and Altar and Rosary Society. Most recently she attended St. Joseph Church in West Liberty.
She had worked as a Registered Nurse off and on during her married life. She had been employed in Chicago, West Palm Beach, Florida and Washington D.C. before her marriage, she later worked Private Duty Nursing in Iowa City and was employed by Mercy Hospital until 1973, after that she worked at the Lone Tree Care Center until 1983. She moved from her home in Nichols to West Liberty in May 1993.
Surviving are three children: Diane (Kenneth) Barkhurst of Huntington, Illinois, Carol (Andrew) Kimes of Cotati, California, and David (Laurie) Jansen of Nichols. 9 Grandchildren: Angela (Kevin) Powell, Cristine (Tony) Salazar, Shawn (Amy) Barkhurst, Timothy (Adrian) Barkhurst, Carrie (Bill) Han, Stephanie (Mitch McAtee) Jansen, Graham Blackman, Emily Blackman and Morgan Kimes. 11 Great grandchildren also survive: Josh, Kayla, Lindsay, and Alex Powell, Isabel Salazar, Abigail and Gabriel Barkhurst, Blayne, Briston and Levi MaAtee, and Rilee Han. Two sisters: Ortha Neff of Iowa City and Marcella Barnhart of Nichols. She was preceded in death by her parents, Husband, 3 brothers: Merton in infancy and Ralph and Duane Neff, sister: Theodora Harder and a grandson Eric Blackman.
