West Liberty, Iowa Howard David Harmon, 88, died Tuesday October 1, 2013 at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty. Memorial services will be held 10:30 A.M. Friday October 4, 2013 at the United Methodist Church in West Liberty. Visitation will be held Thursday from 4 to 7 P.M. at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty. A memorial fund has been established. Howard was born December 25, 1924, in Moorhead, Iowa to George Emmett and Minnie Etta (Outhouse) Harmon. He attended country school east of Moorhead, grade school in Moorhead and then graduated from Pisgah High School in 1942. He worked briefly as a clerk at the bus station in Sioux City, Iowa. In 1942 he enlisted in the US Navy, and served during WWII where he was a radioman first class in communications until his honorable discharge in 1946. On December 5, 1943 he was united in marriage to Darlene Collins in Pisgah, Iowa. At the end WWII he went to Sioux City to attend Morning Side College where he finished his 4 year degree in 3 years. He tried out for the Yankees minor league team – turned down the opportunity to take care of his family. Howard started as a teacher and coach at Rock Valley where he taught shop and history and coached baseball, basketball and taught drivers education 1949-1962; his team won state championship in baseball in 1951. In 1962 he moved to West Liberty for a counseling position at the West Liberty School System. He later went to Sioux Falls, SD for masters in counseling 1966-67 and received a grant to attend school in Portland, Oregon for 9 months. He returned to West Liberty to be guidance counselor and teach drivers education; for a short time he coached track taught history, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the West Liberty United Methodist Church where he served as a Trustee and High School Sunday School Teacher. He was also a member of the Lion’s Club and the American Legion. Howard loved to play golf, and fishing taking many trips to Canada. He was a competitive card player – bridge, pinochle and cribbage. Enjoyed going to dances every Saturday night. He served as a Board member for Golden Years Housing. He is survived by his wife Darlene, daughter Kathy Harmon of West Liberty, three sons Denny (Nancy) of Everly, Iowa, Gary (Bao) of Las Vegas, Nevada and Scott (Lynn) Harmon of Muscatine, Iowa; grandchildren and great-grandchildren (see below) sister Margaret Hamer of Missouri Valley and many other relatives and friends. Seven grandchildren: Tami (Jesse) Streinz of West Branch,Todd (Nancy) Chown of West Liberty, Matt Harmon of Ankeny, Iowa, Quinton (Anna) Harmon of Everly, Jared Harmon of Des Moines, Iowa, Madelyn (Dylan) Schneeberger of Clinton, Iowa and Olivia Harmon of Muscatine. Eight great grandchildren: Morgan and Jack Dragovich, Cole, Gavin and Nathan Chown, Drew Harmon, Eli and Martina Harmon. Howard was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Everett and George Harmon; two sisters Virginia Cave and Velma Holben; great-grandson Hunter Chown.
