Fred was born October 19, 1923 at the Crew family farm on the east side of West Branch, Iowa and later was raised there by his aunt and uncle Floyd and Ruthanna (Crew) Gruwell where he worked until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943. He served in New Guinea, Philippines, and Japan during World War II.
After the war He worked as a carpenter with his brothers, Clarence and Fritz, in Crew Construction Company. Together they built many homes in the Iowa City and West Branch area, including the St. Bernadette’s church in West Branch, moved and restored the Quakers meeting house and built the black smith’s shop for the Presidential Hoover Park.
He returned to farming in 1970 until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing in his younger years with the many friends and relatives that accompanied him at the cabin on the Iowa River and later a cabin on the Cedar River. He loved fox and coyote hunting with his greyhounds. He also enjoyed coon hunting at night with his coonhounds.
After retirement, Fred could be seen zipping around the West Branch area in his John Deere Gator, checking the sheep and took pleasure in taking care of his orphaned lambs and numerous cats. In April 2013, his oldest son Mike escorted him on an Honor Flight to visit the World War II Monument in Washington, DC. He appreciated the support of the hundreds of people at the airport who took the time to welcome them home. He loved life and enjoyed visiting with everyone he met.
