Dorothy Word, 89, of West Liberty, died Friday, July 10, 2015 at Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.
Funeral service will be held 10:30 A.M., Tuesday July 14, 2015 at the West Liberty United Methodist Church. Visitation will be Monday 5 to 7 P.M. at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. Burial will be in the West Branch Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Simpson Memorial Home. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.hendersonbarkerfuneralhome.com.
Dorothy Eloise Edwards was born November 4, 1925, in West Branch, Iowa, the daughter of Dewey Eugene (D.E.) and Anna Elizabeth (Marolf) Edwards. She graduated from West Branch High School in 1943. She married Charles Jacobsen. The couple had 2 sons. She later married William Thomas Marsh Word. The couple had one daughter.
Dorothy worked for many years as a secretary and bookkeeper, beginning at her father's business, Edwards Well Drilling. She later worked at Viggo M. Jensen Construction Co. in Coralville, American Prosthetics in Iowa City, and Martin Insurance Agency in West Liberty. Dorothy had served several terms on the West Liberty City Council. She was also a Vista Volunteer. She was a member of West Liberty United Methodist Church, Centerdale Federated Women's Club and West Liberty Federated Women's Club.
She is survived by two sons, C. Wayne Jacobsen and wife Connie of Eau Claire, WI., Lynn Jacobsen and wife Vicki of New London, IA.; and daughter Joanne Salemink and husband Scott of West Branch, IA.; six grandchildren, Scott Prater of Tulsa, OK., Wendy Jacobsen of Iowa City, Andy Jacobsen of Illinois, Tori Jacobsen of Orlando, Florida, and Gabby and Max Salemink of West Branch, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother John E. Edwards; special cousin Eloise Evans; and step-daughter Marsha Ann (Word) Moore.
