Obituary of Maureen Marie Sanders

West Liberty, Iowa

Maureen M. Sanders, 89, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, December 27, 2024, with her family by her side.

Private family services will be held, with burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the West Liberty United Methodist Church.

Maureen Marie Bender was born on May 2, 1935, to Clyde and Idella (Rowe) Bender. She attended Downey School for a short time before her family moved to West Liberty, where she graduated in 1953. On March 21, 1955, she married LeRoy Sanders in West Liberty, and together they farmed for many years.

Maureen was a member of the West Liberty United Methodist Church. She found joy in collecting antiques—especially those featuring strawberries, and hurricane lamps. Christmas, her favorite holiday, she always displayed a large snowman collection which was a beloved part of her holiday traditions. Fulfilling her wish, Maureen lived to spend one last Christmas surrounded by her family.

She is survived by her two children, Cindy (Russ) Sanders and Curt Sanders, both of West Liberty; two grandchildren, Tiffany (Willy) Goodale of Iowa City and Vaughn Sanders of Sierra Vista, Arizona; and four great-grandchildren: Lexi Goodale, Austyn Goodale, Marrisa Goodale, and Mason Goodale. She is also survived by a sister Bonita Tice of Cedar Falls and brother Larry Bender of Wilton. Maureen was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, LeRoy, in 1998.
