So sorry for your loss!! I was so saddened to see that Shirley had passed. My father was Ed McQuillen and a classmate with Shirley. Over all the years he spoke very fondly of her and had so many wonderful things to say about her. My dad loved his classmates and enjoyed all the time he spent with them. It brought me to tears to see in Shirley's video a few pictures of her classmates. I thought it was so touching that my dad was sitting next to Shirley in the one picture. Our parents are our world and very special people and it is so hard to let them go. I just wanted to reach out and let you know our family is thinking of all of you and I know if my dad was here his heart would be so saddened. Prayers for you all in the difficult days and months ahead as your life is changing. Kandi Dieckman - Wilton, IA (daughter of Ed McQuillen)

I met Shirley in August of 1973 as she and Gloria Lawrence greeted me when I came to the Jefferson Building to begin my job as a faculty member in school psychology at the University of Iowa.
Our first conversation set what was to follow in the next 50 years of friendship. I said I lost my Mother on the way to Iowa and they both said they were so sorry for my loss. I said "No, I just lost track of her in her car as she was helping move to Iowa."
Grocery shopping adventures on double coupon day, a slumber party for her 50th birthday, and she and Joe traveling to Texas to visit Don, Christopher, and me are just a few the highlights!
Who could forget her magical desk drawer which contained everything you might need, especially something to make Egg Nog even better?!
Who else, but Shirley and Joe, would give Christopher and me a place to live before we found a house upon our return Iowa in 1987?
Brad and Patty, Randy and Kris, Jenny, Joey, and Nick:
I am so sorry for the loss of your Mother and Grandmother. Shirley made a difference in the lives of many persons and she will be missed by many. I am glad we crossed paths in this life.

She was an inspirational teacher at Bunker Hill one room school. She even attended a Bunker Hill School reunion at the Bunker Hill Barn on the farm where I spent many years. Attached is a photo from the Bunker Hill reunion of Shirley between me and my brother who were two of her students. Also attached is a class photo, I am at the front far right and my brother is at the far left to the rear. Dennis Petersen

I first met Shirley at a TTT meeting ,a group which gives camp scholarships to 4th graders. Her cheery smile and "helper" attitude always made sure the fund raising for camp scholarships was successful! Others in this group carry on because of the groundwork Shirley laid.
Sympathy to the family, Jan Koellner
