From Ron Smith: Ted & I were members of the Fall, 1961 Pledge Class of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at the U of Iowa. About 6 months thereafter, Ted & I were members of the Pi Kappa Alpha Intramural basketball team (photo attached) that won the All-University championship. Ted was the ball-handling point guard and a very good athlete. Ted & I re-connected about 20yrs ago, and would get together about twice a year thereafter. The photo of the two of us was taken at the cabin in about 2006

Work hard play hard. Yes you did and what fun to be around you when you were at play. I will miss your wonderful teddy bear hugs . I will miss being able to call you and tell you my troubles, knowing that you care.Ted always called if Maryland had weather issues to hear if we were effected.
Here is an interesting memory. A neighborhood girl, Francis, who was quite a bully, was intimidating me. Off to my side, Ted was making a hard snowball that he threw at Francis as she came toward me. Francis got a big black eye. Ted and I always chuckled about that occasion.

Ted was one of a kind without a doubt! I was fostering Ruby Sue when I had to take my mom’s dog in who was not so dog friendly and Ted stepped up to the plate and fostered her and later adopted her. I would tell Ted she lived so long because he loved her so much and he let her sleep on the couch ALL day. All of us at Last Hope are truly saddened by Ted’s death. Ted loved animals to his very core! Rest in peace my friend and give Ruby Sue a hug for me.

When I first met Kandi. We frequented Herb N Lou's often. One night I took a date there and Ted walked up to me and gave me long kiss.
I think it was supposed to make the date jealous (which it did). Anyway, there were many great times and I know that his girls are going to miss him terribly.
I remember a quote that he used to say...
It's the quality not the quantity. lol
Ted was one of the best father's I have ever seen.
He cherished his girls and they cherished him.

To all of Ted's favorite daughters,
I'm so sorry we have lost such a special person in our lives. Ted or Tully, as we called him was such a special guy in my life.. We went to school together and really, were in quite a bit of trouble together, way to many to tell, but one time in grade school, we sat next to each other and at that time used those old gum erasers, always breaking off a chunk, Tully broke off a chunk and I told him to stick it up his nose AND HE DID. We couldn't get it out nor could our 4th grade teacher, Miss Lehman, so poor Tully had to go to the doctor. We had a lot of great times..
He sat across from me at our class reunion in July and we had a lot of good laughs and stories.
In later years, we would always travel to West Branch to the Hoover House to eat and have a drink or two. Tully always made sure we were satisfied.
We have lost a great guy and he will be missed by so many. Girls, always think of your precious Dad with a smile and know he is on your shoulder and smiling at you.
With my sincerest sympathy,
Anna Stoneking Baker

My wife Thelma and I were saddened to learn of Ted's death. He was a friend and classmate of mine at Mt. Vernon High School. I first met him when my family moved to Mt. Vernon in 1958. He has been a friend ever since then and I always looked forward to seeing him at the class reunions and sadly that is the only time in recent years. However, I remember well when we used to enjoy meals at the Hoover House and he also printed our wedding invitations. Luckily, we also got to see him at a class gathering in July. He was a corker and a bit of a rascal but a really good man. The world is a little bit worse off without him. Condolences to all his family and to each of his favorite daughters. All of you are in our prayers.

To Teddy’s family,
I am so very sorry. Sending you all love and warm hugs. Your Dad was a wonderful caring friend to so many. I am going to share one of my favorite memories of him.
We went on many vacations with Teddy. The first time we vacationed together was in Biloxi. Jack , Sara, Sarah Ted, and Ted and I went down on a golfing vacation. Your Dad was freshly divorced. I remember he had a huge beard and the first night I was teasing him that he was not going to find a woman when he had that beard. So he looks at me and says “ok mama T you can shave it off. “ He always called me Mama T. So I went and got scissors and a razor and started cutting. I decided to shave it into a goatee. He was against it, but I said if you hate it I will shave it off. Got it finished and he said give me a mirror. All I had was a toaster so I handed him that. He liked it and that is how he worn his facial hair ever since. That was probably 35 years ago.
I will miss Gumpy. Like many, we had many great times together.
Love you Gump, Fly high my friend.
Sandy

I worked at the Hoover House during my teen years to age 20. Ted would be like a busy bee fluttering around ensuring all was going smoothly. Sometimes after working to serve others all night the staff would have a meal and drinks together at the restaurant. How I miss those days.

"Hey, Danny, how you doin'?" was Ted's greeting each and every time I ran into him at my dad's house, the golf course, the Hoover House or anywhere else, and the greeting was always delivered with a smile.
I never got to Biloxi when he was there with my folks; probably just as well because I was still a wild child and we probably would've gotten into trouble of some sort.
One of my best memories was after I bought the acreage from my dad, and Ted still lived down Cedar Johnson Road. Had some bad snow a couple of times and he let me borrow the old beater pickup with the snowplow on it, to clear my lane. If I could just get to Ted's without getting stuck, I could use it for free. Free didn't turn out so great the 2 times I used it, the first time I had to put a new battery in it and the second time it needed a new alternator. I told him he only loaned it to me so he could get it fixed! We had a good laugh about that.
Great memories of an unforgettable figure, Ted will be missed by so many. Rest in peace, Ted.

I found him on classmates.come about a year & a half ago & we texted back & forth! He told me about his life & where he was living! I had an aunt who lived in Cedar Bluffs years ago!
It was. Nice to see him after 63 years at our class reunion in July! We sat together!

What a beautiful write up to one very unique person. Ted (along with his daughter Kat) was one of the first transport drivers I met up with in Waterloo. He could always be counted on to help out and loved each pup he transported as if they were his own. Blessings to his family and thank you for sharing him with the transport world.

Oh Teddy! I have had a really hard time finding the words to share, but here goes.
My earliest memories of you are getting drug along tailgaiting with you and my dad. I was like 10. You and dad would both give me a 20 dollar bill and tell me to go spend it somewhere else. Super safe. I'm ok.
When I was a Senior In High School, you and dad took me with you to Biloxi. We made a day excursion to New Orleans, where you told me I looked like a hooker standing next to the Bourbon Street sign, but then made up for it by buying me a Malibu and Pineapple. The next night my dad and his buddies had to figure out who was the most sober to get you out of jail for ending up in the Military Zone. My next trip to Biloxi was when I was following you home from the bar, and you hopped a median and drove down the wrong side of the road. Still one of the funniest things I have ever witnessed. I could go on and on, but some memories just can't be shared. :)
Those are the memories I cherish. You were the only one who called me CUB besides my dad. I wouldn't of had it any other way. I am going to miss you so damn much but I will never forget you. Love always Teddy!

I have had the honor of knowing Ted since my early 20's, exact year is a little blurry understandably. There were countless Cedar river trips, cabin parties, afties at his house, golf tournaments, and of utmost importance, the annual Alpine Valley Buffet trips. I'm amazed I was asked back after the year I missed the bus back to the motel and was delivered back hours later in the back of a cop car. Ted met me with a beer in one hand and his camera in the other to document the momentous occasion. I'm not sure when exactly he started referring to me as his future ex-wife but that became my greeting every time followed by a hug and a kiss. His laugh was infectious, his outlook on life always so positive, his stories so long but so entertaining and he will be so greatly missed. Have a drink with Kramer for me & until we meet again, love always your future ex-wife.

Uncle Ted certainly defined for me what “Uncle” was supposed to mean. Fun, adventurous, curious, warm etc. I will always fondly remember the summer I spent on the farm where he gave me the nickname “Crash” due to all my own mis-adventures. He is fondly remembered and will be dearly missed.

Ted, You were certainly one of a kind and will be missed dearly by all. I have so many memories (some are "fuzzier" than others....;)) of events during my youth involving Ted and the Pence family that I will always cherish.
I do know that my indoctrination to champagne took place at one of the early Champagne Open tournaments and I do recall being rolled out of the golf cart at one point (likely a passenger related issue with none other than Ted at the wheel of the cart)....
That is just one of the many great memories from the Greenview Country Club and you could always find Ted at the center of the fun that was to be had there and elsewhere!
The other great source of Ted memories occurred at the Lake of the Ozarks. I first learned to water ski behind the Pence boat and recall several great times at various lake bars our families would frequent.
Ted knew how to celebrate and live life to the fullest and how to make what might be ordinary events become extraordinary!
Our deepest condolences to the family for the loss of Ted and we look forward to sharing a toast in his honor down the road. Love, Zeke & Stacy Brenneke

The photo on the river is one of my favorite pictures of always.
That time we decided to drive the back roads on a nice fall day and take pictures of the country scenery with our fancy cameras. The leaves weren’t cooperating that year, so we didn’t get crisp, fall scenery, but a sunny 70s trip that worked up a thirst for Redd’s Hard Apple. We stopped at Breitbach's Country Dining on Balltown Rd and talked about the past, dogs, family, life. We logged our Redds on MyFitnessPal and complained about how low our calorie allowance was; decided to call it a wash, and ordered two more.
There was never another weekend like that one. I always wanted there to be. But mortality has a way of reminding us that life is shorter than you think, even when some days seem impossibly and tragically long. Yesterday was one of those. Today too. Maybe tomorrow will be better.
