I will miss Jim and am proud to have known him. I'm even prouder to say I played league pool with him, though he was a far superior player.
Jim was kind and friendly, and had a gentle good humor. Many was the night he would say of pool, the game he loved, "I hate this game."

The world is indeed a sadder place for the loss of our dear friend, James. Blessed with laughter and warmth, he enriched those around him with his kind heart, thoughtful gestures, and engaging charm. The wisdom he imparted on our young ones especially in billiards lays testimony to his love for sharing joys. His creativity resonated through the beautiful woodwork crafted by his hands. Together with Nancy, they embodied a vibrant zest for life that was truly aspirational and will forever be remembered.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Jim. Jim shot pool on our team for a number of years. He was always sharing his big smile with those around him, but also showed great support and friendship. I think back fondly of those days with Jim and the guys. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends. God Bless

Jim was born to be a grandpa. His six grandchildren are beyond lucky to have had Jim in their lives. Grandpa Goofy was just that. Always making someone laugh. With funny hats. Singing Santa's. And lots and lots and lots of stories. We loved sharing Disney with Nancy and Jim. They were both always game for sitting at the pool and hanging out at a hot tub. And it was so easy to spend the afternoon on their patio just talking and spending time together.
Everyone that knew Jim knew that he would do anything for you. We couldn't go anywhere in West Branch with Jim without running into multiple people that he knew. He was a great friend, a great father-in-law and an amazing grandpa. He will be missed by many and loved forever.

There wasn't a time in my life I did not know Jim & most of my childhood I grew up seeing him weekly/daily. Dad & Jim were good friends & worked at Cargill for umpty-seven years. My grandparents backyard on 6th St bumped into Racey's backyard where I frequently played.
I always had a fond admiration for Jim for so many reasons. He was a great father (Derek & Destiny were so lucky), friend, & had some pretty cool life experiences along with his talents.
At a preschool age I would play with my "feed trucks" & "Racey" was one of the main characters of my imaginary set. As I grew older, going to their house, events around town or Cargill events I gained more of a relationship. I would ride my bike to Cargill for a $.35 Pepsi out of the machine & occasionally sit in the breakroom, sometimes Jim would be there & I was just "one of the guys." I loved trucks & even if Dad let me in his truck, I still had to get into Racey's truck too. He would oblige. As my interest in trucks faded & firefighting became an interest, Jim had those stories too. Being on the USS ENTERPRISE he talked about fighting fires on deck & that peaked my interest as well. Then, he taught me how to (properly) play pool. It was enough just to watch his skill & trick shots. Even as my kids learned from me, I used the same tips Jim showed me in his basement. From dinners, parties, birthdays, and other events...he was always fun to be around. I was fortunate to witness the transformation at the house from building his pool room, the woodshed where it all starts, the woodwork throughout the house, and even as an adult taking my kids past at Christmas to see his homemade, animated, woodcrafted decorations. I remember when he built some of them. And the WBHS gym that housed the EIHC wooden mascots on the wall from 1980's into 2000's...crafted by Jim Racey.
I would definitely say he was an influence in my life. A positive soul. In fact, he brought a smile every time I saw him. Just running into him recent years, he would stop to talk...ask about kids...the fire department...how was my Dad doing or what was he up to...just one the people you truly enjoy conversing. I will miss those moments. Still, I will treasure the ones I had & I'm blessed to have known him so well.
Nancy, Derek, Destiny & Family, my deepest condolences. While this time is a difficult one for you all, you all had your lives filled with one of the best. Your loss is great. Your legacy is grand.
We loved Jim as a great friend.
God bless.

Condolences to Jim's family. I knew him from the Iowa City pool leagues. A classic good guy, always with a smile and a good word. A person who made the world better. Rest in peace.
