Obituary of Joyce Eileen Hahn

West Liberty, Iowa

Joyce Eileen Hahn, 76, passed away suddenly March 30, 2023 at her home in West Liberty.

Visitation will be held 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. Funeral Service will be held 10:30 A.M. Wednesday at the First Church United in West Liberty. Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty.

Memorials may be made to the First Church United.

Joyce was born May 10, 1946 the daughter of Frank Keith and Nima (Wilson) McClelland in Washington County. She was a graduate of Keota High School in the Class of 1964 and later attended business college. On June 20, 1971 she was united in marriage to Gary Hahn at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City. 

Joyce spent many years as a farm wife helping Gary milk cows daily early in their marriage with three young children in the milking barn. Once the girls went to school she did clerical work for Louis Rich and then worked at the University of Iowa purchasing dept for many years.

She was an active member of the First Church United, former lady of the Jaycees, Women’s Federated Club, and previously served as a superintendent in the open junior department and hobbies at the Muscatine County Fair. When the girls were younger she bowled on the weekly womens and mixed league bowling teams in West Liberty. She was known for her escalloped chicken, ham balls, buttermilk brownies, and banana split dessert; no one left hungry when Joyce was cooking or baking.

Although Joyce didn’t always approve of Gary’s last minute ideas of “lets get in the Car and Go”, she did enjoy their many trips to Branson; especially at Christmas Time, taking countless family vacations throughout the United States. and attending her daughters and then grandchilden’s various activities.

Joyce could talk all day on the phone with friends and family even though she never did have a cell phone. She could play a competitive hand of cards, especially 500 or canasta, and loved cheering on her beloved Iowa Men's basketball team whether she was watching them in person at Carver Hawkeye Arena or in front of her TV with the volume turned up all the way.  But most importantly, she enjoyed baking cookies and cupcakes for her grandchildren when they would stop by to visit.

Joyce is survived by her husband Gary, three daughters: Eileen (Todd) Heck of Columbus Jct, Deanna (Nathan) Harbeck of Frankfort, Illinois and Lisa (Joel) Murphy of West Liberty. Nine grandchildren: Logan, Mason and Connor Heck, Alyssa, Jocelyn and Sydney Harbeck and Payton, Tenley and Aniston Murphy. She was preceded in death by her parents, grandson Luke Matthew Heck, two sisters: Beverly and Janice and one brother Wade.
