Our heartfelt condolences to Paul's family. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
Paul was a life-long friend and mentor, having been my Sunday School teacher and occasional contact throughout my growing-up years in West Branch and throughout my attendance/confirmation at Bethany Lutheran Church.
Paul was a generous and good man who never forgot his roots. He spent countless hours compiling a comprehensive history of Danish immigration to the West Branch area, published in three volumes. At one point he entrusted me with this history but ultimately (and rightfully!) decided it would be better kept by the church. May it live on, forever, as an historic record.
More than once, Paul mentioned that his father, Marius, required a sponsor in order to emigrate to the United States. This turned out to be a relative--Alfred Sondergard (Alfred is believed to be the first "Sondergard" to flee Denmark, having arrived on April 13, 1902). In any event, Paul shared his father's gratitude for Alfred having helped him immigrate in 1923.
Naturally, whenever thoughts turn to things Danish, Paul comes to mind. When our family hosted a "Danish family reunion" in West Branch several years ago, Paul was the obvious choice to be our "guest historian." It was a big ask and Paul could have easily said "no thanks" but of course he didn't. We are so grateful he agreed and went on to graciously lead a terrific tour by car(s) of local farms and places of family historic interest. We are forever in his debt for this ... and for many other things.
Paul will be sorely missed by all who knew him. It is comforting to know that his deep faith has no doubt brought him home to a better place--perhaps a place where delicious Danish pastries on on the menu every single day! May he rest in peace.
